The stadium’s architecture, draped in a flowing tensile fabric envelope, recalls the idea of a Bedouin tent—colloquially known as bayt al sha’ar, the traditional shelter of the region’s nomadic tribes—amid the sandy stretches that characterise its surroundings along the outskirts of Al Khor city. Despite the exaggerated feeling of scale, its pure white shape, emphasised by black streaks and red accents along the openings, serves as a contextually meaningful landmark.

Even before its debut match, Stadium 974 created history. It is the world’s first totally demountable covered football stadium, made entirely of shipping containers and modular steel, demonstrating Qatar’s dedication to cost-effective sustainability and imaginative design.
According to reports, officials have began destroying Stadium 974 after it hosted seven FIFA World Cup events, including six group games and one Round of 16 knockout encounter. It was also the only World Cup stadium built without air conditioning, hence it exclusively held evening matches. The BBC reports that construction workers arrived on the venue on December 9 to “take the stadium out of tournament mode.” The construction was created to be the first FIFA-compliant stadium that can be completely demolished and repurposed once the competition is over.
